1. sigh
n. an act or the sound of sighing 叹息;叹气声
We all breathed a sigh of relief when it was over.
“Maybe he will never come,” she said with a sigh.
v. ①to take and then let out a long deep breath that can be heard, to show that you are disappointed, sad, tired, etc. 叹息
She sighed with relief that it was all over.
I sighed for his sufferings.
②to say sth with a sigh. 叹息着说
'Oh well, better luck next time,' she sighed.
“I am not that lucky girl,” she sighed.
③(literary) (especially of the wind) to make a long sound like a sigh. 像叹息一样
Branches sigh in the wind.
The winter wind sighs as something bad happenes.
2. twinkle
n. ①an expression in your eyes that shows you are happy or amused about sth. 眼睛中闪耀的光
He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye.
She smiled with a twinkle in her eyes which made her beautiful.
②a small light that keeps changing from bright to faint to bright again. 闪烁的光
We could see the twinkle of the harbour lights in the distance.
I forget everything on that day except the twinkle of the stars.
v. ①to shine with a light that keeps changing from bright to faint to bright again. 闪亮
Stars twinkled in the sky.
Why could star twinkle in the sky?
②if your eyes twinkle, you have a bright expression because you are happy or excited. 眼睛发光
His mother twinkled at him over her teacup.
Her eyes twinkled with happiness.
3. downcast
adj. ①(of eyes) looking down. 眼睛向下看的
Eyes downcast, she continued eating and did not speak again.
He produced a forced smile with downcast eyes.
②(of a person or an expression) sad or depressed. 沮丧的
A group of downcast men stood waiting for food.
Don’t be downcast, life will be better.
4. outstanding
adj. ①extremely good; excellent. 杰出的
Derartu is an outstanding athlete and deserved to win.
I have a dream that is to be an outstanding man.
②very obvious or important. 明显的;重要的
His mother, whose influence on his development was outstanding, came of distinguished American family.
The characteristic of that person is outstanding.
③(of payment, work, problems, etc.) not yet paid, done, solved, etc. 未支付的;未解决的
A lot of work is still outstanding.
We still have some outstanding issues to resolve.
5. enlist
v. ①to persuade sb to help you or to join you in doing sth.
They hoped to enlist the help of the public in solving the crime.
My father was enlisted as helper.
②to join or to make sb join the armed forces. 从军;征募
He was enlisted into the US Navy.
I don’t want to be enlisted because a soldier must have heavy duties.
