1.squat
v.(1) to sit on your heels with your knees bent up close to your body 蹲坐
(2) to live in a building or on land which is not yours, without the owner’s permission 偷住,擅自占用(房子或地方)
e. g. They ended up squatting in the empty houses on Oxford Road.
mine: They have been squatted in this house for several years, but now they are squatting in the street without any shelter.
2.profess
v.(formal) (1) to claim that sth is true or correct, especially when it is not 妄称,伪称
(2) to state openly that you have a particular belief, feeling, etc. 宣称,公开表明
(3) to belong to a particular religion 信奉,信仰
e. g. He professed his admiration for their work.
mine: I can’t profess my expert in this area.
3.inexorable
adj. (of a process) that cannot be stopped or changed 不可阻挡的,无法改变的
e. g. The rise of crime in this village is inexorable.
mine: The inexorable change of globalization has influenced the whole world.
4.exhilarate
v. to make sb feel very happy and excited 使高兴,使兴奋,使激动
e. g. Speed had always exhilarated him.
mine: Playing ball games can exhilarate every dog.
5.whack
v. (1)(informal) to hit sb/sth very hard 猛打,重击,狠揍
(2)(spoken) to put sth somewhere without much care 草草放下
n. (1)(informal0 the act of hitting sb/sth hard; the sound made by this 重击,重击声)
(2)(BrE) a share of sth; a amount of sth 一份,量
e. g. She whacked him with her bag.
Just whack your bag in the corner.
You have to pay the full whack.
mine: Whack your bag aside and do your own whack of this work.
