“He is as stiff as a poker,” said a friend of a man who could never be coaxed or tempted to smile. ”Stiff as a poker,” exclaimed another, ”why he would set an example to a poker.”
—— Moral Sunshine Orison Marden
A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.
—— Companionship of Books Samuel Smiles
Suffering is always the effect of wrong thought in some direction. It is an indication that the individual is out of harmony with himself, with the law of his being. Blessedness, not material possessions, is the measure of right thought; wretchedness, not lack of material possessions, is the measure of wrong thought. A man may be cured and rich; he may be blessed and poor. Blessedness and riches are only joined together when the riches are rightly and wisely used; and the poor man only descends into wretchedness when he regards his lot as a burden unjustly imposed.
——Effect of Wrong Thought is Suffering James Allen
