My hometown
If you ever heard a city which shares the same name with the province, I’ll tell you she is my hometown. Jilin City, the second largest city in Jilin province, deserves a reputation of “northern river town.” She lies in the upstream of Songhua River, which is viewed as the mother river by people on both side, and attracts more and more tourists to her charming scene and long history.
I think the top highlight of Jilin should be the Jilin Rime. This is Wu Song, one of Chinese four natural wonders. This scene only happens in winter. Water discharged from the reservoir keeps an ordinary temperature so that it brings lots of steam which would congeal on the branches in the catalytic of cold air, hence the rime can be formed. Every winter at this time, the government will organizes the celebration of “Rime and Ice Festival” for citizen to fully enjoy the poetic scene of crystal rime and dancing snowflakes. Therefore, it come another name of Jilin, which is “the Rime Metropolis”.
Not only the Jilin Rime, but also the surrounding hills and river decorate the city. It is often said by the olds that the geomantic omen here is fantastic. Because there are Songhua River flowing through the city and also four mountains surrounding which are called “Black Dragon,”“White Tiger, ”“Suzaku, ”and“Basalt”，respectively. Among them, the “Black Dragon” --Long Tan Mountain is especially famous owing to the worship of many Qing emperors. In fact, Jilin was one of the places where Manchus originated. In their languages, Jilin means “the city along the river”. Shipbuilding used to be the major industry of the native in old days. Now there is a statue of the oaring man standing in the city center, it has became the city landmark. It reminds the people that although the old tradition had passed, the history and origin should never be forgotten.
