My hometown is Tianjin, located in the northern. Its name means “the place where the emperor crossed the river”. With a positive mentality, local people enjoy a good and prosperous life, not to excessive pursuit of material. Variety sounds mixed a melodious song as my memory of hometown.
When I was in elementary school, the shouts of street vendors impressed me deeply. The narrow alley was crowded by vendors and parents. While the vendor’s voice always accurately entered into my ears through the impending waves of people. Especially passing the vendor of the tomatoes on sticks, I heard voices loud and clear, unbearably catching a glimpse of them. If I was lucky, my grandmother would buy one of them. Even before I was graduated from elementary school, the old town was pulled down except my school. Consequently the noisy and sweet sounds were placed by the solitary bird song. In my mind, the other special sound remains in the Tianjin cross-talk teahouse. As we all know, Tianjin enjoys a reputation of cradle of operas and motherland of Quyi. I was gone to the teahouse twice. There are common sound from the performer drumming, playing the Kuaiban and audience laughing, however, the sounds of “yu……” occurs from the audience on the occasion of telling ironic words. In other area, performers might think that this kind of sound means *** catcalls. But both audience and performer of Tianjin regard “yu” as an approach to express the feeling of favor the performances.
Whether you love these sounds or not, but they are the truly embodiments of my hometown in my ears. In my inner world, these tiny sounds could reserve original movement in the metropolis
