My Hometown
Every time when people ask me of my hometown, I always answer them proudly without any hesitation, “the biggest coal-mining city of northeast of China——Jixi in Hei Longjiang Province”.
Jixi is a city of the spirit of dedication. Unlike the cities in the southern regions of the Yangtze River who gives people an image of a graceful girl holding an oiled umbrella, Jixi is more like a selfless mother dedicating its rich coal resources to the rest parts of China. Although the underground mining makes her skin pocked with scars, she still grins and bears all the pains.
Jixi is a city of vigor and vitality both in economic and culture. As a frontier of China, Jixi lies right next to Russia across the Wusuli River. The port trade is injecting flesh blood into the domestic market continuously. You can often see Russian parents with their babies walking on the street in my hometown. These babies are like cute dolls so much that I can barely suppress my desire to pinch their cheeks. Inhibited by the Korean nationality, Jixi region is known for its Korean specialties. For instance, Cold Noodle, a traditional Korean dish made from wheat or buckwheat, is particularly associated with Jixi. The contemporary dish is a fusion of Korean and Northeastern Chinese flavors and derives its name from its distinctly cold taste. The noodles are often served with dried bean curds, day lily, and shredded kelp, along with other ingredients. Also consumed by locals is Korean-style dog meat and sushi rolls wrapped by dry seaweed sheets.
Jixi is a city of patriotism. The story of the well known model opera 《the Red Lantern》just took place in my hometown. The revolutionary heroes used the red lantern to send signals secretly. Going through all the tortures and temptations, they wiped out all the enemies eventually. From my point of view, this patriotism and northeast characteristic enthusiasm are shaped by the howling wind and heavy snow in winter. In the process of fighting against the nature, people insert perseverance and persistence into their characters unconsciously.
Maybe my hometown is not as well developed as these metropolis and also lack glaring history. But I love this fertile and unsophisticated land more than anywhere else in this world. I feel blessed to get the opportunity to grow up on this fertile black earth and let the water of my hometown flowing in my vessels.
