My hometown is a small town located in the north west of Jintan--a county-level city within Changzhou in Jiangsu province. It is a typical small town in the south of Yangtze River. A tributary of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flow through the whole town. You can hear the cargo ships whistling along the river every morning, indicating the beginning of a brand new day: Farmers pace on the roads across the fields to go with their farm work. Workers riding their vehicles rushing over the bridge to the factories. The children walking in small groups, chasing about, towards their school.
The area here is small but the resources are abundant. It has the largest salt mines in Jiangsu province. And the empty pits are also used as the largest underground storge of gas in West-East natural gas transmission project. The typical southern climate grants the town various agricultural products. Red taro, garlic and cress are all specialities in my hometown. The most famous speciality is “Jintan Queshe(sparrow tongue)”--a kind of green tea which is well-known by its green colour, rich fragrance, mellow taste and beautiful shape.
It’s also a town which blend the traditional culture with dynamic modern spirits. You can still find some handcraft workshop hidden in the old alleys which sell products made by elderly crafters. Another traditional feature is the “Jucun Dragon Dance” which can trace back to Ming Dynasty, it still is performed in great occasions and grand festivals. At the same time, the modern industrial development brings the prosperity of the economy. There are more than fifty industrial factories which lead to great economical improvement.
The folkway here is unsophisticated, and people live a slower pace of life. The relationship among neighbourhood remains close. Neighbours will gather together after dinner, sitting in a circle in front of the house and talking about what they see and hear during the day. Every one pass-by can get a warm greeting from them.
