A. drain
I assure you that even just two thousand pounds would be a drain upon her resources.
E.g. The war was an enormous drain on the country’s resources.
B. beggarly
To lose her husband for such a beggarly sum which she could easily get by turning her diamonds into paste.
E.g. He only received a miserly beggarly, begrudging pittance.
C. spring
Then, with the gesture of a man who has taken his decision, he sprang to his feet and passed into his bedroom.
E.g. He sprang to his feet after rolling on the ground.
D. concentrated
I had a catching of the breath, and my skin went cold at the words, which were slowly uttered in a tone of concentrated resolution.
E.g. Economics is the base and politics the concentrated expression of economics.
E. composed
There was no promise of a speedy departure in his composed bearing and his comfortable attitude.
E.g. Anger appeared on her usually composed face.
