Should we share everything on the social networks ?
The Internet has become a part of people's life in the new era, especially us college students. Most of us have microblogs, RenRen and QQ, then we upload photos, videos and write our feelings, our sense of life on the net everyday. In America, many students even announce their intimate personal details publicly on the Facebook, and of course , this phenomenon is also happened in China. Our students always post something on the net without thought of the consequences. Should we share everything on the net? It's certainly not. We should have the sense to protect our privacy.
First, we should try to avoid use the real name on the net, and we can use an alias for on sites such as MySpace. It's fine to tell trusted friends from school how to find our profiles and what name we use for chatting and instant messaging, but keep the last name, age and other identifying information off of our pages, if possible. It keeps a lot of shady characters from looking up other information about us, such as our address or what school we attend.
Second, we should keep our address and phone number to ourself. Even if we screen our online friends carefully, it's good common sense to keep as much contact information to ourself as possible. Don't share the name of the place we work, our school or even our favorite after-school hangout on our page. If we must list some contact information, list the secondary email account, not the one we use for everyday stuff. Spammers love to grab email addresses from MySpace pages, so use an email address with a good spam filter, too.
Third, we should not post photos, especially the flirty photos, that might give people the wrong idea about us. I find a rule of thumb: If we'd be embarrassed for our favorite teacher or our best friend’s parents to see it, it probably doesn’t belong on our page.
Last but not least, do not use these social networks to gripe about classmates or teachers. We should remember that whatever we write can always get back to the person we're writing about. If what wesay is untrue, or even just unflattering, it could get we suspended or fired .
