Today, the Social Networking Services has become an indispensable part of people’s life. The Internet connects people from every corner of the world by breaking down national boarders. As an increasing number of people rely on the cyberspace, problems gradually emerge from the extreme differences between the virtual world and the real one. Young people publicly announce intimate personal details or post seemingly embarrassing events, which is hard to be understood by those who hold a relevantly conservative value. Yet, the young people can hardly be blamed for what they post on the internet because that world is so tolerable that it allows any kind of extraordinary groups to express whatever they want; besides, it is common to be uncommon in the cyberworld.
I think following reasons can explain their behavior and may be the purpose of their revealing everything online.
Firstly, people are eager to express their emotions immediately. A controversial topic, a funny word or an ironic event can easily cause a crazy discussion on SNS, like Facebook or Renren. Everyone gives their opinions and feelings and share with each other, and then they can find their allies who have the same thoughts. They become impatient of holding back their feelings. They wanna spit it out instantly. Social networking services provide them a free platform to post the present state of mind promptly. And those ideas produced by netizens can cause a significant influence on society, especially on the press. It is not uncommon that what is hot on the internet today will show up on TV tomorrow.
Secondly, through networks youngsters find a way of fitting themselves in the circle by replying all the comments following under their posts. The latest survey shows that about 78% of netizens spend two hours everyday in browsing through blogs and check all the “latest events” posted by their friends. Replying under the posts becomes a new way of communication among young people. Some university students even think that ignoring others’ comments or less frequently posting will cause loss of friendship or decline in prestige in real life. Therefore, it is inevitable for them to pay much attention on what is happening on the web and update frequently to catch the latest information.
Thirdly, people is likely to seek for sympathy or compliments by posting states when they are going through frustrating period or undergoing a successful experience. In the information era, people can hardly find consolation from those nearby, but between the lines on the screen. They expect to get words like “What happened to you?” or “Don’t worry, buddy. I’ve got you back”. Those encouraging words can really cheer people up and comfort them when they are in the bottom of life. However, some people just want to show off in front of their friends. Those who are in relationships tend to post all the photos of the two and report every single happy moment on the web to show that they are so lucky to find the right one, hoping to receive others’ envious blessing and totally ignoring those single people’s feeling.
In conclusion, networking services bring about a new lifestyle for people living in the information bombarded society. Some opinions and habits are formed in the process of popularization of using SNS. There are several reasons for the unusual behaviors in the net world, which we can do little to change.
