1048412 许俊 第三次作业 Higher Education and Social Inequality
The fairness of higher education plays a significant role in the entire social justice in that the higher education is not only aimed at selecting talents, but also fostering the talented. The higher education is the most effective method by which people can choose the proper occupation and promote society status. On one hand, to a certain degree, the expansion of college enrollment in China makes higher education more fair in recent years, however, on the other hand, because of the charge system of higher education, students from the very bottom of society cannot afford the soaring tuition, then have to give up this opportunity that will be possible to change their destinies. At last, it will be sure to cause “The Matthew Effect” which says “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer”. And this will not be beneficial to the stability and advancement of the society. If we want the higher education to contribute to the society equality, the higher education itself should be equal, but indeed in China, as far as I am concerned, the higher education magnifies the social inequality at present.
Reasons are as followed:
Firstly, our system of college admissions exacerbates the injustice. The current system in China is just fair in its form even though it emphasizes that everyone is equal before marks. However, In fact, when admitting students, the cut-off mark can vary by a student's place of residence and ethnicity. The quota of admission is not decided by the amount of the students, but by the principle of considering the priority of the students in cities. Therefore, it is unfair for students from which the cut-off mark is very high to enter the college. Moreover, the examination papers of college entrance examination are largely only considering the educational levels of students in developed areas instead of poor students. While they are choosing the school, students in rural areas also have difficulty in having access to the update information of recruitment. These all cause the injustice for students in less developed districts.
Secondly, the high tuition of higher education in China is another reason for the magnification of the social inequality. A lot of talents are kept away from the entrance to the higher education because of the soaring tuition which is a representative and direct phenomenon of the inequality in the field of higher education. As a report revealed, the expense of education have the biggest portion in the whole expense of one family in China. In 2004, the average net income of urban residents is 9422 RMB while the average net income of farmers is 2936 RMB. If we take these data to calculate, supporting a college student for higher education needs 2.4 times as much as the annual net income of urban residents or 13.6 times as much as the annual net income of farmers. At the same time, the system of scholarship and student loans which has not been improved and perfected causes lots of good students to have no access to higher education or to have no opportunity to choose what they like. Because of the financial problems, the students with poor condition are defeated in the starting line of higher education.
Thirdly, the difference of the higher educational qualities contributes a lot to the social injustice. The departments concerned pay more attention to the key universities in China. The capital investment, the resources and the development opportunities can vary very differently between the famous key schools and the weak average schools, and it leads students who have the same admission will get different educational qualities and attain different knowledge levels. The imbalance between different public universities arouses the public’s great attention. Moreover, it is more common between public universities and private universities. At the same time, different districts including the east and the west, the cities and rural areas also have a host of imbalances and injustices which will affect the achievement of the education justice directly.
Last but not least, the employment of students graduated from different universities also confront with the unfairness. The treatments of graduates vary differently between different universities such as the key and the non-key, the ordinary universities and vocational colleges, and the public and the private in the employment market. Students from a non-key university will find it difficult to find a good internship or employment. At present, if you want to be admitted to a famous or well-paid corporation, you should graduate from one of the schools of the Project 985 or Project 211, it is a basic requirement for applicants. It is unfair for students from ordinary colleges in that they even have no access to the opportunities regardless of their talents.

Higher education cannot afford to be "distracted" from the issues facing it, he said. 例句来源,BBC: After scandal, what happens now to University of Wales?
The Higher Education Minister, Kim Howells, said the overall increase in applicants was good news. BBC: Overseas students pay more than those from the UK and EU
2,On one hand, to a certain degree, the expansion of college enrollment in China makes higher education more fair in recent years在该句中建议将on one hand改为on the one hand,两种说法都可以,后者多在稍正式的场合用尤其是在论文中,最好还是用后者
3,And this will not be beneficial to the stability and advancement of the society. 个人觉得这句话可以用动词benifit改写一下会更简洁生动一点
第二段:However, In fact, when admitting students, the cut-off mark can vary by a student's place of residence and ethnicity.
Vary 当即物动词时指" 使变化",既然这句话想表达a student's place of residence and ethnicity
造成了 the cut-off mark的变化,所以我觉得应该改写为the cut-off mark can be varied by a student's place of residence and ethnicity..当 vary用作不及物动词时一般与with, from,in搭配
第三段:Because of the financial problems, the students with poor condition are defeated in the starting line of higher education.
这句中poor condition前应该用in,例如It is being closed to allow repair works to the su***ce of the roundabout, which is in poor condition. BBC: Roundabout repairs driver warning in North Lincolnshire
第四段:Thirdly, the difference of the higher educational qualities contributes a lot to the social injustice.
the higher educational qualities 貌似没有这种说法或者有点中式英语的感觉, 应改为the quality of higher education
第五段:那个the schools of the Project 985 or Project 211,最好给211,985 project加上个引号吧,因为国外没有这些说法
以上是我个人观点,如果觉得有改的不太对的地方,咱继续交流,共同努力哈
